Story 1: Overcoming Resistance to Help and Improving Family Communication
During her first visit in 6 months, Joan Abrahams was surprised and upset when she found that her mother, an 83-year-old widow with Parkinson's disease and glaucoma, had stopped taking showers for fear of falling, was relying on take-in food and lived in an untidy home wearing stained clothes. Her mother, however, was incredibly resistant to additional care.

Story 2: Monitoring and Coordination Stabilizes the Status of an Older Man With Multiple Chronic Conditions
Cynthia Anderson was concerned about her father, a sophisticated 84-year-old widower with obesity, lymphedema, diabetes, coronary artery disease and acute respiratory failure who was taking 13 different medications. Due to her heavy work responsibilities, she was not as involved in his care as she wished to be. She was relieved when she was able to find a an assisted living facility they both liked but soon learned he required more assistance than anyone had anticipated.
